Goal Setting
Did you take action in Chapter 6&5&4?
If not, stop reading this now and
Finish the "taking action" in section 6&4.
<> What are goals? Goals are the things or ideals we have chosen to work for. They can be either material items, things we want to accomplish or idealized lifestyles. Goals are choices.
<> When we were young we were told to choose a goal, something to work toward, but few of us were instructed in how to set a goal, nor were we encouraged to review and update our goals on a regular basis.
<> Are goals important? At Yale University, the graduating class of 1953 was surveyed and one of the areas they were questioned about was whether they had a set of specific, written goals. Only three percent of them reported they had written goals.
<> When they were interviewed twenty years later, the three percent who had written goals appeared happier and better adjusted than the rest of their classmates. Happiness and adjustment are subjective items and they are difficult to measure, but an area that can be measured is wealth. Not only were the three percent who had written goals wealthier, they had more wealth than the remaining 97 percent combined! It might be interesting to note that only three percent of the general population has a set of specific goals in writing.
<> Virtually every personal development program I have looked at emphasizes goal setting as a major key for success. The book Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill is a good example. Mr. Hill was commissioned by Andrew Carnegie to discover how and why people get rich and write a book on the subject in order to make these secrets available to everyone. Mr. Carnegie charged him to incorporate the secrets he discovered in this book, but not to say them clearly.
<> He believed the discovery of the secrets by the reader would be more effective. If you read this book carefully the secrets become clear. The major secret, as I perceive it, is goal setting. However, there is much more than goal setting in this wonderful book. I recommend that you read Think and Grow Rich.
<> Do you have goals? I do not mean a vague daydream you have nourished throughout the years, I mean something you have given careful thought to and made a conscious choice about. Most of us have dreams we would like to see come true; "someday I'm going to . . .," these are not goals.
A goal is something we are strongly motivated about, something we are absolutely committed to make happen
<> Without goals we have no direction, no purpose for our lives. Think of it like going on a trip to the drug store. If you know which drug store you are going to it is relatively simple to get there. If you do not know which drug store you are going to you may spend several days wandering around trying to find one. When we set a goal we are making a decision about where we want to go with our lives. Without goals our lives are adrift in the chaos of time and events. Rather than arranging our life the way we want it, we allow random events to determine the course
<> Goals are power in our lives. We do not fully understand how goals work to manifest what we desire, but we do know they work. Goals work like magic! Before you are frightened away by the metaphysical connotation you should remember, fire was magic to the caveman.
<> Anything we do not fully understand can be called magic and that magic is God's proof to us that we do not know everything. I believe goal setting works because it is a concentration of our thoughts, which has the effect of focusing and directing our physical actions.
<> If I suddenly want to visit friends who live out of town, and if I am strongly motivated to make the trip, I might as well pack my bags.
<> Motivation is the reason why we want to do or have something.
The stronger the reasons why, the stronger the motivation. If my reasons why are strong enough, my subconscious mind will begin directing my actions toward making the trip possible.
<> Did you ever notice that when you are really motivated to do or to have something, it is much easier to get it? The most successful people are those who have goals that motivate them every minute of every day. The people who you imagine are the most successful probably have a goal they are working toward and a plan for getting there.
<> There are some lucky people, but people who "luck into" successful situations are rarely able to hold on to them. I can promise you, if you set a realistic, workable goal it is attainable. There are no free rides though. You will have to stick to your goals for the long term and it may not be easy. Obviously, there are some things you cannot do, at least it is very unlikely you will be able to do them.
<> For example, I cannot go back to being twenty years of age, rejoin the Marine Corps and win the Vietnam War for our country. I can do other things though and these are the things I need to direct my goals toward.
<> The first step, and everything I have written on the subject of goal setting has been directed toward this, you must know that goal setting will work for you and will bring you anything you desire. If you do not set goals and believe they will work for you, your life will remain adrift in the chaos of time and events. Visualization is an active tool in reaching your goals.
<> Visualization is nothing more than creating the things or situations you want as pictures in your mind. I spend 30 minutes every day sitting in a quiet room, thinking about my major goals and picturing my life with these goals already met. When you visualize, do not doubt your ability to achieve whatever you desire. You need to picture what you want as already existing in your reality.
<> Feel your success and enjoy it. Visualization imprints your desires upon your subconscious mind and the subconscious will act upon anything you desire. It is not magic or any other type of metaphysical event, it is just the power of our own minds working through us to bring us what we desire. Do not tell anyone what your goals are! This is important! If you tell others about your
goals you are opening yourself to their criticism.
<> When you accept criticism from others it influences your resolve and your core beliefs. Keep it to yourself! I need to qualify that statement. If you are working on this program with a spouse or another loved one it is important to share your thoughts, feelings and hopes for the future. It not only allows you to share the joy, it will double your efforts and . resourcefulness.
You may decide to eliminate some of the habits you have identified in this Part as a part of your major goals.

Egyptian police harass voters and arrest Islamists
ALEXANDRIA/TANTA, Egypt - Egyptian police restricted voting in areas contested by the opposition Muslim Brotherhood on Saturday and detained more than 800 Islamists trying to build on early success in parliamentary elections.
Thousands of riot police deployed in constituencies where the Muslim Brotherhood was fielding a candidate, in many cases sealing off polling stations or severely limiting the number of people who could go in and vote, witnesses said.
Young Islamists clashed with riot police in an Alexandria slum in the early evening, after waiting in vain to vote. In other places, thugs attacked Brotherhood activists.
A leading judge told Reuters that some judges packed up early in protest and took ballot boxes away with them.
"Security forces surrounded some of the polling stations, blocking some voters from entering," said Ahmed Mekki, a judge in charge of an election monitoring effort by the judiciary.
Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Abdel Muezz Mohamed said 56 judges had refused to take part in the count because of flagrant violations during the day's voting. Altogether more than 11,000 judiciary personnel are supervising the process.
There was also scattered violence on the fourth day of voting in the long electoral process, which ends on December 7. Monitors said members of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) and the Brotherhood had brawled at some polling stations.
The Brotherhood, which fields candidates as independents because the government refuses to recognize the group, won more seats than President Hosni Mubarak's NDP in voting last Sunday.
GOVERNMENT SHAKEN
Although it does not have enough candidates to break the NDP's overall control over parliament, its electoral success has shaken the government and ruling party.
As polling stations closed at 7 p.m. (1700 GMT), riot police and young Islamists fought running battles through the alleyways of the Dekheila slum in west Alexandria.
"This is the response of the government to people wanting to exercise their right to vote," said Walid, a young carpenter.
In another Alexandria district, Taher Abdel Fattah said he had been prevented from voting by a police cordon.
"The government told us we should vote and decide the future of this country. Now the same government is stopping us voting. This is disgusting. There is no freedom here," he said.
"Tomorrow they will say the election was fair and everyone is happy. It will all be lies. We are ruled by liars and thugs," said Mohamed Ibrahim, 31, who was also trying to vote.
In the Nile Delta city of Tanta, a line of riot police three deep kept voters out. After polls closed, police ejected Brotherhood representative Mohamed Ibrahim from the counting hall, Ibrahim said. "The only people inside now are NDP."
The Muslim Brotherhood said police had detained 860 Muslim Brotherhood supporters since the early hours, starting with dawn raids on their homes and continuing with arrests outside polling stations. Monitors confirmed arrests outside the stations.
An Interior Ministry spokesman said police had deployed in strength but this was to ensure orderly voting.
CLUBS AND MACHETES
In Hayatim, men with machetes and clubs attacked Brotherhood organisers outside stations as soon as they opened in the morning, frightening voters away, witnesses and monitors said.
"I raised a chair to defend myself but I was hit on the head and shoulder," Brotherhood campaign worker Mahmoud Mohamed told Reuters. His head was bandaged.
Journalists for the French agency AFP, Reuters, the British Broadcasting Corporation and the U.S.-based Associated Press all reported being harassed and having equipment or papers seized.
"I was telling London that troops were threatening voters, beating them with sticks and using teargas," said Mohammad Taha, an Egyptian working for the BBC.
"Then one of the officers heard me ... and put his hands round my neck. He tried to put me on the ground. But I struggled. I was on air at the time ... He told me to shut up and used a stick to hit me in the stomach. Then he asked one of the officers to take me away."
In Alexandria, Mahrous Tantawi, an unemployed man, said the NDP had paid him 20 Egyptian pounds for his vote. "I got the money last night and now I'm here so they can take me to the polling station to vote," he told Reuters.
The Muslim Brotherhood so far has 47 of the elected seats in parliament, against about 120 for the ruling party. It was well placed to add more on Saturday and in the next round.
The Brotherhood, which advocates political freedoms and wants to bring Egyptian law closer to Islamic law, was contesting 41 of the 121 seats at stake on Saturday.

PAIN AVOIDANCE Part # 6 POWER OF CREATION
Welcome to part Six, Power of creation
<> Dysfunctional relationship <>
Pain avoidance, The most successful people , Goals that motivate, adventure of personal development, stressor to identify changes in our lives
This is called a dysfunctional relationship. The term, co-dependency, is most often used when the affected person is suffering from alcoholism or drug addiction, but co-dependency can also occur from other things.
If a person is experiencing an illness such as diabetes, for example, that person will experience a behavior change because of the strict diet, medication and lifestyle they must adopt in order to survive. If a person suddenly went overboard with a religion they will experience a behavior change.
Anyone in a relationship with these people will need to change the way they relate to that person in order to maintain the relationship. If it is only a friend then it may end the relationship, but if it is a family member the relationship will change in a very predictable way
The behavior adopted by members of a "dysfunctional" relationship does not go away and most often requires treatment. Learning of the principles of codependency has changed my life in ways I cannot begin to describe in the space I have available. You can- find books on the subject in your local library or at the bookstores at the mall.
Do yourself and your family a favor, get a book covering the subject of co-dependency and read it carefully. You will never regret it! We discovered in Part 1 that our core beliefs determine how we interact with our environment and that much of our behavior is determined by these core beliefs. I believe most of our actions are habits and many of these habits reflect our core beliefs. We learn, over a period of time, what type of behavior will work for us in the environment we are in and we use that behavior to get the results we want.
Many of the things we do that limit our Success are the result of habits we form unconsciously by what is called pain avoidance. If we choose to watch television (pleasure), instead of completing
a chore (pain), after repeating that behavior over a period of time, watching the television instead of doing the chore is considered normal by our subconscious mind and it will seek ways to continue the behavior.
The most successful people are those who have goals that motivate them every minute of every day. These people have developed habits in their daily lives that empower them to work constantly toward goals they have chosen. Most people have allowed habits to form that do not empower them. Many of the habits your parents conditioned you with as a child are the foundation for the habits you will need to create as you embark on this adventure of personal development.
Just as you would not think of starting a day without bathing or brushing your teeth, you can develop habits that will keep you working toward your goals and allow you to enjoy the process. There is one last area of habits that I want to cover before you begin today's action.
Psychologists use the term stressor to identify changes in our lives that will cause us pain in the form of excess stress. Stressors are changes in the things that comprise a large portion of our lives. Loosing a loved one is a stressor, so is moving to a different house, changing jobs and so on.
Psychologists suggest that most people can only cope with two or three stressors per year without experiencing some type of emotional problem. Depression is the usual result of experiencing a stressor, but other emotional changes like aggressive behavior, the inability to focus our thoughts or a complete emotional breakdown can also occur.
When a stressor occurs in our lives it interrupts our patterns of comfort. These are nothing more than habits we have developed to allow us to deal effectively with our environment and the people we associate with. When we interrupt these patterns, our lives must adjust in order to allow us to form new patterns. Since much of our lives are set in patterns of comfort, any change you cause with a program like this will interrupt these patterns.
It is important for you to understand that the changes you choose to make in your life will not necessarily be comfortable for you at first, because you are disturbing patterns of comfort.
Taking Action
Pay attention to your activities, Start keeping a daily journal or diary.
Look for the habits in your life, Do not worry., Become aware of your habits,
The first step in solving a problem is identification of the problem.
1 - Pay attention to your activities. Pay attention to the activities in your everyday life that you have allowed to become habits. Make a list of all of the habits you can recognize in your life. You can add to your list whenever you think about them.
2 - Start keeping a daily journal or diary.
A journal is like a diary,
but instead of just recording your most intimate thoughts,
though you may if you choose to,
a journal is used to record the important events of the day.
It is not easy to get into the habit of updating it daily.
Like anything else you have tried to do, it will get easier in a short time.
You do not have to write a long,
drawn out description of everything that happened during the day.
Just a quick note about the important events and the things you learned that day.
A journal will be valuable to you as a way of evaluating your progress in life.
3 - Look for the habits in your life. Think about the route you take to work or go to school every day. Think of your relationships with those you love. Are there habits you have developed that you would rather do away with? Do you have a routine you always do when you get off work? or go to, School college, Are these habits empowering you to achieve the things you want out of life?
If you have difficulty recognizing your habits, ask someone you love (trust) and someone who loves (trusts) you about your habits. Do not worry about any habits you have now, unless you feel they are destructive to yourself or others. You should just become aware of your habits so you can decide later if you need to adjust or eliminate any of them.
The first step in solving a problem is identification of the problem.
You may decide to eliminate some of the habits you have identified
in this Part as a part of your major goals.
